From the Lake to Life: Empowerment Through Adaptive Water Sports

At Arizona Adaptive Water Sports, we believe in one thing: everyone deserves the chance to feel the wind in their hair, the sun on their face, and the thrill of freedom that only water sports can bring. Whether you're three or ninety-three, living with a spinal cord injury, a brain injury survivor, a disabled veteran, blind or low vision, using a wheelchair, or facing a challenge like ALS—we see you. And not only do we see you, we invite you.

Because on the water, souls are refreshed.

Our mission is simple but powerful: to create life-changing experiences through adaptive water sports that spark confidence, fuel hope, and transform lives from the inside out. And we've seen it happen time and time again.

When someone who never thought they'd water ski again—or ever—gets up on skis and skims across the surface of a lake, you can see it in their eyes: possibility. When a child with limited mobility laughs uncontrollably while tubing behind a boat, you feel it in your chest: joy. When a disabled veteran casts a line out into the peaceful water while surrounded by new friends, you hear it in their voice: hope.

These moments matter. They ripple.

The water is our playground, but it’s also our launching pad. Because what happens out here on the lake doesn't stay here. It follows our participants home.

A young adult who once hesitated to leave the house after a brain injury starts looking up college courses.

A teenager in a wheelchair who thought they could never keep up with their friends is now leading the charge on the kayak.

A mom living with ALS who thought her adventure days were over now can’t stop talking about her tubing ride.

One day on the water sparks a lifetime of new beginnings.

That’s the power of being an adaptive athlete.

At Arizona Adaptive Water Sports, we don’t just offer activities—we offer opportunities. We get people out on the water for tubing, water skiing, surfing, fishing, kayaking, and boating, often for the first time in years or for the first time. We provide the equipment, the trained volunteers, the safety, and the encouragement. All you have to bring is yourself and a willingness to try. We’ll take care of the rest.

And it’s not about ability level. We’ve had participants with complete spinal cord injuries up and water skiing. We’ve had blind and low-vision athletes navigate kayaks with confidence. We’ve had veterans with PTSD find peace in the quiet rhythm of fishing. We've seen brain injury survivors rediscover parts of themselves they thought were lost.

No one is too old. No one is too young. No one is left out.

We are committed to saying "yes" when the world says "no."

And the result? Empowerment. Not just in that moment on the lake, but in life.

We've seen participants come back year after year, each time bolder, braver, and more alive. Some have gone on to try other adaptive sports. Others have taken that surge of confidence to make new friends, join community programs, or finally go for that job interview they were too scared to face before.

This is the ripple effect of hope.

Because when someone discovers they can do something they never imagined, it changes how they see every challenge ahead. And the message is clear:

If I can do that... what else is possible?

We believe in that question. We live for that question. It’s what drives us to host multiple events throughout the year, ensuring that adaptive athletes of all ages and abilities get to feel the magic of water sports in a way that works for them.

Our inclusive, welcoming community is what makes these events so special. Here, you’re not defined by your diagnosis. You're not limited by your wheelchair or your white cane. You're not seen as someone who "can't."

You're seen as someone who can.

And let’s be real—the water doesn't care about your labels. It cares about your spirit. Your courage. Your joy. So when you come out with Arizona Adaptive Water Sports, you leave limitations behind. You laugh louder, dream bigger, and leave stronger.

To every brain injury survivor, every person with a spinal cord injury, every disabled veteran, every individual who is blind or low vision, everyone living with ALS, and anyone navigating life in a wheelchair: this is your invitation.

Come join us.

Let us show you the power of being an adaptive athlete.

Let us remind you what’s possible.

And let the waves carry you not just across the water—but into a future filled with confidence, community, and hope.

Fueling Courage by Unlocking Possibilities on the Water

Arizona Gives Day is a powerful 24-hour online giving movement that unites Arizonans around causes they believe in. Since its inception in 2013, Arizona Gives Day has raised over $47 million for more than 2,000 nonprofits, demonstrating the immense generosity and community spirit of our state. This annual event, powered by AZ Impact for Good, takes place at the beginning of April and helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities by inspiring people to give generously, creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all.

One such nonprofit that embodies the transformative power of community support is Arizona Adaptive Water Sports (AAWS). Dedicated to breaking down barriers, AAWS provides individuals with disabilities, ages 3 and older, the opportunity to experience the freedom and adventure of water sports. Their mission is to serve and advocate for people with disabilities by providing access to play and adventure on the water.

Empowering Through Water Sports

AAWS offers a wide range of adaptive water sports activities, including water skiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, tubing, fishing, kayaking, and boating. These activities are tailored to accommodate various abilities, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive challenges, can participate and enjoy the thrill of water sports.

The organization's vision is for any child or adult with a disability to have access to get on the water and embrace the freedom and adventure that awaits. By offering these adaptive sports, AAWS not only provides recreational opportunities but also fosters a sense of independence and accomplishment among participants.

Expanding Horizons Across Arizona's Lakes

AAWS hosts events at various lakes throughout Arizona, making their programs accessible to communities statewide. Some popular locations include Bartlett Lake, Lake Havasu, Lake Powell, Lake Pleasant, and more. Each event is meticulously planned to ensure safety and enjoyment, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Arizona's waterways while engaging in exhilarating activities.

Fostering Hope and Confidence

The impact of AAWS's programs extends far beyond the water. Engaging in adaptive water sports can be a catalyst for personal growth and transformation. Participants often discover newfound confidence and resilience, which permeate other aspects of their lives. For instance:

  • Embracing New Challenges: After conquering the waves through activities like wake surfing or kayaking, individuals feel empowered to tackle other new experiences, breaking down mental barriers and expanding their horizons.

  • Building Social Connections: The camaraderie fostered during AAWS events encourages participants to form new friendships, enhancing their social networks and reducing feelings of isolation.

  • Pursuing Professional Opportunities: The confidence gained on the water can translate into the professional realm, motivating individuals to apply for jobs, seek promotions, or embark on new career paths.

One participant shared, "I had no idea that one day of play could change the way I see and live my life. I wish I had done it sooner!" Such testimonials highlight the profound, life-changing impact of AAWS's programs.
